PAYNE Haas has spearheaded the Broncos under-20s to a big scalp in the National Youth Competition match in Newcastle today.

The teenage prop steamrolled over for three tries as the ninth-placed Broncos shocked the top-four Knights by the tune of 40-12.

The win means the Broncos will almost certainly jump into the top eight as they begin the run to the NYC finals.

Leading 14-6 at halftime, the Broncos started the second stanza with a two-try blitz that gave them a stranglehold on the match.

Brandon Russell got his second try of the day to catapult his team to a 20-6 lead straight after the break.

Just two minutes later winger David Fauid found some space down the left flank and the Broncos skipped out to 24-6.

When Kotoni Staggs hit a strong line on the right edge and burst through to score, the Broncos were well in control with 25 minutes remaining.

The Knights did not lay down, with back-up hooker Hayden Loughrey bouncing over to cut it to 28-12 with 18 minutes left.

But when Haas strolled over for his second try of the match with eight minutes on the clock, the match was over and the young Broncos had a strong victory.

The NSW under-18s captain finished in style with his third right on the final bell.

Earlier, the Knights scored first through Matt Croker in the seventh minute but then it was all the Broncos.

Haas started the revival when he crashed over in the 24th minute to tie it at 6-all.

The Broncos were ahead when back rower Russell scored his first of the day in the 26th minute.

And when Hayden O’Hara made it three tries in 10 minutes, the Broncos had nabbed a 14-6 lead at halftime.

BRISBANE BRONCOS NYC 40 (P Haas 3, B Russell 2, H O’Hara, D Fauid, K Staggs tries; G Burns 2, Staggs 2 goals) defeated NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS NYC 12 (M Croker, H Loughrey tries; K Gudgeon 2 goals) at McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle.
