Piecing The Pieces Together

THE NRMA Insurance Broncos will have another new halves combination for Saturday’s NRL clash in frigid Canberra.

And while it will Broncos’ fourth different halves line-up in five weeks, that has more to do with depth and injury than coach Wayne Bennett trying to find the right mix.

The combination will have a distinctly New Zealand flavour to it, with former Kiwi Test player Benji Marshall joining current Kiwi international Kodi Nikorima at the scrum base.

It will be the first time this pair has started a match together, with Hunt and Milford playing the first six games of the year before Hunt was hurt.

Milford and Nikorima then formed a partnership that went six matches unbeaten before Milford was called into the Queensland team.

That gave Benji Marshall a chance in a depleted team against the Warriors, alongside Hunt as he came back from a serious hamstring injury.

Now the shoulder injury to Milford against the Rabbitohs has brought Hunt back into the frame.

The former Kangaroo was left out of that last-start win, and he played Intrust Super Cup for the Ipswich Jets that week.

But he is back in the NRL now.

Against the Raiders Hunt will play off the bench as a utility – a role he filled early in his career – and provide back up for Marshall and Nikorima.

Meanwhile, Bennett today named all three of the Broncos’ Origin representatives to play in Canberra.

Captain Darius Boyd, second rower Matt Gillett and lock Josh McGuire all expected to play against the Raiders, despite running out against the Blues in Sydney tomorrow night.

The Broncos did name an extended 22-man squad to cover any eventualities for those star players.

Tevita Pangai junior and Joe Ofahengaue are listed in the 17, with forwards Jai Arrow, Jaydn Su’A and Herman Ese’ese on an extended reserves bench.

Outside backs David Mead and Jonus Pearson were both named as cover for Boyd.
