Paul Broughton medallist Anthony Don was in shock last night when awarded the prestigious medal and couldn’t believe he had beaten some of his team mates in the tally.

Don polled 49 votes in the 3-2-1 tally and the 29-year-old just scraped home in front of Nathan Peats (47), Jarrod Wallace (45), Kevin Proctor (42) and Ryan James (41).

“Yeah, it’s great,” Don said. “I’m stoked and actually a bit nervous because of the four men that are behind me on that list.

“I just stand out on the wing and score a few tries. Some look good and I must’ve got some votes because of that.”

Don played 20 matches in season 2017, scoring 12 tries and the Grafton junior admits he’s come a long way.

“I definitely have (come a long way). I was just playing country football for Grafton and then after I came to Burleigh I managed to earn a pre-season and have been lucky enough to notch up a few games.

“Carty (former Coach John Cartwright) gave me a chance at the start and I’ve been lucky this season as well.”

There have been many people that have helped out over the years but Don was quick to point out three people.

“Big thanks to my wife (Sam) and my mum and dad. They’ve been there since the start of the journey.”

Don becomes just the second ‘back’ to win the award since Preston Campbell back in 2008.
