Beaver set to tackle the Everest

Walking up steep, long hills on the Northern Beaches has helped Steve Menzies prepare for his Mount Everest climb.

As a Manly junior, Steve Menzies climbed many mountains on his way to becoming one of the greatest Sea Eagles players of all time.

From coming through the lower grades to representing his State and Country, overcoming injuries, and winning premierships, no mountain was too high for ‘Beaver’ to climb.

Until possibly now. In a great show of spirit and passion to help raise funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF), Menzies will leave on Saturday, October 14, for a 14-day trek to climb Mount Everest.

Following the inspirational success of the Paul Harragan-led Kokoda Trek in aid of the Mark Hughes Foundation last year, Menzies will join former Newcastle Knights’ players from the 1997 and 2001 grand finals to take on the Everest Base Camp in support of their great mate Mark Hughes and to help tackle brain cancer.

The Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) is a not for profit organisation formed in Newcastle by Mark and Kirralee Hughes following Mark’s diagnosis with Brain Cancer in 2013. Mark is a well-known and highly respected former Newcastle Knights Rugby League player, business and community identity who is undergoing treatment to fight brain cancer.

The Mark Hughes Foundation has been formed to raise much needed funds to fund brain cancer research, heighten awareness and support brain cancer patients and their families within the community.

The ‘MHF Everest Challenge’ team includes Matty Johns, Bill Peden, Danny Buderus, Matt Gidley, Kurt Gidley, Paul Harragon and Mark Hughes.

Menzies has set up a ‘EverydayHero’ page where supporters can make donations for the Mark Hughes Foundation. Almost $2500 has been raised to date.

“I’ve created this page because I want to make a difference. I’m inspired by the work of Mark Hughes Foundation and wanted to support them by raising money as part of my participation in 2017 Everest Trek,’’ Menzies said.

“Please help me help them by giving whatever you can. The more people that know about Mark Hughes Foundation, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot.”

Lottoland, the Premier Partner of the Sea Eagles, is delighted to support ‘Beaver’ and the Foundation.

“Lottoland is proud to get behind ‘Beaver’ and the Mark Hughes Foundation, pledging a further $7,500, to such a great cause,’’ said Matthew Brinckley,’ Marketing Director Australia.

“Despite recent media reports, Lottoland continues their support of charity and contribution within the community. We have a three-year commitment to Manly and we fully intend to honour it and hope to renew.

“We encourage other sponsors of the Sea Eagles to support this great cause.”
