Winners of the 2017 League in Libraries competition Tiaki McArdle and James Broadwith had a memorable trip to Auckland as part of their ultimate prize.

Their prize packages included return flights to Auckland, accommodation at SKYCITY and the opportunity to meet the Vodafone Warriors personally.

This year the Harvey Norman Community Warriors partnered with CSG to launch the League in Libraries programme nationally.

As winner of the primary school category, McArdle, from Eskdale Primary in Napier, wrote a story titled ‘An Eggcellent Adventure’, which sees Vodafone Warriors players using their footy skills to save a mother moa’s egg from being snatched by an eagle.

Broadwith, from Kaingaroa School in Kaitaia, won the intermediate category with his story “Pete and the Cosmic Kick’. His tale is about Pete teaming up with the Vodafone Warriors to help save Mount Smart Stadium from a giant meteor heading directly for the team’s home base.

After arriving at Auckland Airport, the young authors visited CSG and met illustrator Paul Cornwell, who brought their stories to life.

Once the illustrations were finalised they watched their books being printed before reading their freshly bound copies to their parents.

Their Saturday morning consisted of attending the captain’s run ahead of the Vodafone Warriors’ home game against Canberra followed by a personal signing session with a difference; after getting their own autographs, the winners signed their books and gifted them to the players.

Treated to a suite on game day, McArdle and Broadwith were also given the opportunity to line up in the tunnel alongside the Vodafone Warriors and run out with the team before kick-off in the clash against the Raiders.

Their Auckland adventure also included accommodation at SKYCITY before they headed back to their hometowns.

In this year’s unveiling of the League in Libraries winners, the Vodafone Warriors made trips to both Napier and Kaitaia, treating Tiaki and James’ classes to a special library visit where each student was gifted a goodie bag.
